Since 1966 you were allowed to create engines in any format - as long as it was a maximum of 3 litre capacity. And teams ran all sorts of engines, flat 4s, inline 4s, V6s, V8s, V16s - the lot. But there was one rule they ignored. You were allowed ‘forced induction’ engines, but they had to be less than 1.5 litres in capacity. So they WERE allowed turbos and superchargers.
