The F1 rule Ferrari is banking on to save its fast-but-fragile engine
- Posted by hudson on Jul 20, 2022
After a tough couple of years for Ferrari on the engine front, its 2022 F1 power unit is back among the strongest on the grid. The trouble is, it hasn’t been very reliable.
A litany of Ferrari failures, most recently Carlos Sainz’s fiery’ internal combustion engine failure while on target to finish second in the Austrian Grand Prix, have hit the team hard. And customer teams Alfa Romeo and Haas haven’t been immune from such problems either.
What’s more, Ferrari is ranked lowest with six retirements this season - two for Charles Leclerc and four for the unfortunate Carlos Sainz.
Ferrari’s power unit frailty is a weakness, but it is not as disastrous as you might think given F1’s engine freeze. To understand why, we have to look in detail at how the regulations work.
